Hajo Wiesemann is a pianist, composer, and musical director working at the intersection of jazz, contemporary music, chamber music, and theater. He studied jazz piano at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. Wiesemann is pianist of the Geysir Quartett and the Essen Jazz Orchestra, which was nominated for the German Jazz Award in 2023 and received the “Jazz Pott” in 2019. His compositional work combines formal clarity with improvisational freedom and a refined sensitivity to sound color and space. As a composer and musical director, he has worked with the Deutsches Theater Berlin, the Staatstheater Stuttgart, the Essen and Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Theater Heidelberg. His film scores for Die Geschichte einer Familie (The Story of a Family, dir. Karsten Dahlem) and Princess have received multiple awards. The Shakespeare production A Midsummer Night’s Dream (dir. Joanna Praml) at the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus was nominated for the German Theatre Award “Der Faust” in 2017.
