Ansgar Striepens has made a name for himself internationally as a conductor, arranger, composer, jazz musician and educator. He is a recipient of the Order of Merit of the State of Saxony-Anhalt and he and his works have won several awards (including the WDR Jazz Prize in the composition category / German Jazz Award / Quarterly German Record Critics' Award). His first recording “Tunnel Vision - Music for Jazz Orchestra” was followed by a recording with a smaller line-up: “Dreams and Realities”. His compositional skills are documented on the recording “Unsung Heroes”. Directly after his studies at the HfM Cologne in jazz trombone and jazz composition, he took up his first professorship at the HfM Franz Liszt Weimar at the age of 31. From 1999 to 2021 he directed the Saxony-Anhalt Youth Jazz Orchestra and in 2020 he took over as artistic director of the German National Jazz Orchestra (also known as the “Bundesjazzorchester” or “BuJazzO” for short). He has worked with the WDR Big Band as a guest conductor and arranger since 2005. Since the summer semester of 2009, he has been professor of jazz trombone at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen.
