CD: Our Daily Bread

Our Daily Bread / Joe Lovano Trio Tapestry

Joe Lovano Trio Tapestry

release date: 5 May 2023
The third album from Joe Lovano's trio Tapestry shows the group continuing to expand their expansive and lyrical approach with deep listening and intense focus. "Our Daily Bread is driven by the rhythmic spirit of expression, projecting the mysterious world of music that lies before us," Lovano says in his accompanying text, and these elegantly flowing pieces and free-floating ballads do indeed feel like songs of the soul.
"The intensity comes not from the ferocity, but from the depth of feeling," wrote BBC Music Magazine of the group's debut. "Lovano's themes and harmonies offer a rich potential that the trio exploits beautifully, exploring textures and moods as fruitfully as they develop melodies and harmonies."

Marilyn Crispell is the ideal pianist for this music, orchestrating it with a sensitivity attuned to both contemporary chamber music and the world of improvisation. Percussionist Carmen Castaldi, with whom Lovano has worked since his teenage years, enhances the music with his own poetic touch on the cymbals and, like Joe himself, elicits flourishing resonances from the gongs. At the heart of the program, Lovano presents the bluesy "One for Charlie" as a solo tenor tribute to Charlie Haden, giving each note a special meaning, just as the dedicatee of the piece once did.

"Our Daily Bread" was recorded in May 2022 at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano and produced by Manfred Eicher.
