First musically steps in a church choir (Thüringer Sängerknaben), later piano lessons, in the age of 17 trombone.
After school studies at Carl Maria v. Weber Conservatory Dresden in classical trombone (Prof. Hans Hombsch) and Jazz (Prof. Günter Hörig).
After a short engagement in Sinfonisches Orchester Pirna trombonist in the Leipzig Radio Big Band (1978-1986) and jazzmusician in various bands, sometimes as leader of own ensembles.

Works as a composer and arranger in Jazz, Pop, Rock, sinfonic music and chamber music for theatres and broadcasting stations.

From 1979 til 1990 lecturer, than professor til 1997 teaching jazz trombone and leading the big band at the Franz Liszt Conservatory Weimar.

Since 1998 conductor of the Big Band "Fresh Lemons", Erfurt.

As a solist playing various music from Jazz about Rock until conteporary concert music in different ensembles from trompone solo til large orchestra.

Leading his own band "Frieder W. Bergner Contemporary Jazz Band" and as co-leader the "Ensemble Creativ", a 20-musicians band playing jazz and rock- influenced avantgarde music.
