Max Ionata – Saxophonist, Composer, Educator
Max Ionata is regarded today as one of the leading saxophonists on both the Italian and international jazz scenes. He has recorded over one hundred albums, including seventeen as a bandleader, developing over time a personal language that blends the jazz tradition with a constantly evolving sonic exploration. His career has led him to perform at some of the world’s most prestigious festivals and jazz clubs, collaborating with internationally renowned artists such as Alvin Queen, Steve Grossman, Ali Jackson, Jimmy Haslip, Marvin “Smitty” Smith, Reuben Rogers, Clarence Penn, Joe Locke, Lenny White, Dado Moroni, Peter Bernstein, Gegè Telesforo, Enrico Pieranunzi, Greg Hutchinson, Roberto Gatto, among many others.
Over the course of his career, he has received numerous national and international awards and recognitions, including:
- “Massimo Urbani” Award – Winds section (2000)
- First Prize at the National “Baronissi Jazz” Competition (2000)
- Audience Award at the International “Tramplin Jazz D’Avignon” Competition in France (2002)
- Scholarship from Columbia College Chicago (1999), which allowed him to further his studies in Chicago under the direction of Bill Russo
- Featured in Jazzlife Magazine (Japan) in the special issue “Jazz Horn 2010,” where he was highlighted as “one of those saxophonists who have opened a new frontier in jazz”
- Second place in the reeds category in the “Top Jazz 2011” poll by Musica Jazz magazine
- Winner of the “Jazzit Award” as Best Italian Tenor Saxophonist in 2012, 2013, and 2017
- Lifetime Achievement Award “Salerno Jazz” (2025)
Thanks to his distinctive sound and deep artistic sensitivity, Ionata has become one of the key figures in contemporary jazz. He has also worked alongside some of the most prominent performers in Italian popular music, including Mario Biondi, Ornella Vanoni, Nino Buonocore, Renzo Arbore, and Sergio Cammariere, showcasing remarkable stylistic versatility and the ability to adapt his musical language to a variety of settings.
His latest album, Four Groovin’ On, recorded with the Hammond Groovers, is a project that celebrates energy and groove through a modern and engaging approach.
In addition to his busy performing and recording schedule, Max Ionata is also a respected educator. Since 2021, he has been teaching Jazz Improvisation Techniques at the Pollini Conservatory in Padua, where he shares his experience and artistic vision with the next generation of musicians.
His solos are widely studied: many transcriptions circulate online among students and jazz enthusiasts worldwide.
