Born in 1957 in Germany.
Studied classical trumpet at the Conservatory in Kassel. Advanced studies led German to Hamburg, where he studied popular music at the Conservatory for Music, and to Hilversum in the Netherlands, where he graduated in jazz trumpet (with Ack van Rooijen) in 1987.
Played as a classical trumpet player in various classical music and broadcasting productions, such as the Kurt Weill Festival in Dessau, the 'New Music Mönchengladbach', the 'Haller Bachtage', the 'Tage für neue Musik' in Darmstadt, the 'Aktuelle Musik im MMK'. German currently is participating in the Frankfurter Mutare Ensemble for new music, and is co-composer of the widely acclaimed 'Jazz Messe' project, which combines the setup of a classical liturgy with a jazz context. Next to his activities as a classical performer and composer, German has a seat in the jury of a youth contest in Hannover, and co-directs the Youth Symphony Orchestra in Hessen.
As a jazz trumpet player German Marstatt played at venues and festivals throughout Europe, and worked with celebrities as Peter Herbolzheimer, Albert Mangelsdorf, Mel Lewis, Jiggs Whigham, Benny Baily, Meret Becker, and Nina Hagen. German is a member of the German-French Jazz Ensemble, the Frankfurt Jazz Big Band, the jazz quartet Cool Blue, the Blue Room Ensemble, and participated in various orchestras of German and Dutch broadcasting radio & TV stations. As jazz composer and arranger, German also participated in the production of the musical Hair at the State Theatre in Kassel.
Current bands and projects include the Mutare Ensemble, and Interzone.
Teaches big band music, music theory, and other jazz & classical music related subjects at the University of Kassel in Germany, since 1989, and various jazz courses in Germany and Italy.
